Description:
1848-C Two and a Half, MS61
An Underappreciated Charlotte Issue
1848-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. Struck in light yellow-gold with slightly subdued luster, as commonly seen on this issue. There are scattered marks on the obverse and a bit of broken luster over the high points; the reverse is choice with richer color and surprisingly good detail for the issue. There is natural dirt on the reverse in the denticles above STAT in STATES, which adds to this coin's considerable charm. All in all, a considerably above-average example of one of the rarest Charlotte quarter eagles in high grades.
The 1848-C is the ninth-rarest of 20 Charlotte quarter eagles, but it is among the rarest in true Mint State. Only three or four Uncirculated pieces exist, and just one grades better than MS61. There are two varieties known. Variety 1, of which the Cherokee County coin is an example, comes with a better strike than Variety 2 and is considered more desirable by specialists as a result.
