Description:
Choice About Uncirculated 1849-C Quarter Eagle
1849-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Winter 11-G. Formerly sold in our 2001 Central States Sale, where the description read: "The '49-C is a rare issue whose importance has just been recognized in recent years by specialists. It is very rare in high grades with an estimated 14-16 pieces believed extant in Almost Uncirculated and only two Mint State coins believed known. This piece is just outside the Condition Census for the issue. A low-end Condition Census AU 58 example was sold by Superior in their Pre-Long Beach Sale last June and realized $7,360. This piece is not quite as nice as that one, but is typical for the issue with numerous, small abrasions scattered over the surfaces and some weakness of strike noted in the centers. The surfaces have a hard, metallic sheen and the fields display a slightly reflective quality, undoubtedly from the limited use of the dies which only struck 10,220 pieces." Population: 6 in 55, 8 finer (10/02).
Ex: 2001 CSNS Sale (Heritage, 4/01), lot 7683, where it realized $4,025.
