Description

1850-D Quarter Eagle, AU53
Popular Mintmark Type Issue

1850-D $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Variety 14-N (previously unlisted). The upright of the 1 is centered over a dentil on the obverse, and the 0 is spaced two dentils from bust tip, the less frequently seen of the two varieties known for the year. The ubiquitous reverse die began use in 1847 and was continued until 1859. A moderate mintage of 12,148 quarter eagles was accomplished by the Dahlonega Mint in 1850, and the issue is the most available D-mint quarter eagle of the decade. Today, the surviving population is thought to number 125-150 pieces, with more than three dozen specimens in AU grades. The present coin displays unabraded surfaces with lovely deep green highlights, mixed with lighter shades of golden-brown and crimson. Population: 19 in 53, 38 finer (10/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25HJ, PCGS# 7757)
