Description

1851-D Quarter Eagle, AU53
Scarce Undervalued Issue

1851-D $2 1/2 AU53 PCGS. Variety 14-M, the only known dies for this date. A small mintage of 11,264 quarter eagles was accomplished at the Dahlonega Mint in 1851 and the issue is undervalued by most collectors today. An estimated 100-110 survivors are known in all grades, with about two dozen examples in AU grades. The date usually trades in the same price range as several more common dates in the series, such as the 1849-D and 1850-D. The present coin is an attractive example, with only minor abrasions and slight wear on the surfaces. A strike-through (wire?) in the reverse dentils at 10 o'clock is noted. Population: 10 in 53, 11 finer (2/10).
