Description:
1852-C Two and a Half, MS62
Ex: Elrod, Second Finest Known
1852-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. Ex: Elrod. Because there were no quarter eagles struck at the Charlotte Mint in 1853, the 1852-C saw heavier-than-usual circulation. It is ranked as the seventh-rarest of 20 quarter eagles from this mint in terms of its high-grade rarity. This lovely example, a coin well-known and highly regarded by specialists, is another highlight of the Cherokee Collection and a personal favorite of this cataloger. It has an exceptional overall appearance for a date that is almost never seen with good eye appeal. Medium to deep green-gold color attests to its originality and a good deal of satiny luster clings to the undisturbed underlying surfaces. The strike is above-average for the issue, and there are just a few small, insignificant abrasions on the surfaces -- a really special and literally irreplaceable coin.
There are as many as four Uncirculated 1852-C quarter eagles but two standout: the present coin and the Bass II, lot 453 example (graded MS63 PCGS,) which is the finest known. The Bass coin is off the market for the time being, making the present example by far the best available to specialists.
Ex: Paul Dingler and Stanley Elrod Collections; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2517, where it brought $16,100.
From The Cherokee County Collection.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25HS, PCGS# 7764)
