1853 Quarter Eagle, MS64+1853 $2 1/2 MS64+ NGC. CAC. The substantially increased gold supply increased the price of silver in relation to gold, and silver coins all but disappeared from commerce. The quarter eagles were struck in large quantities to aid commercial transactions. Nearly 1.5 million quarter eagles were coined in 1853, yet few survive in Mint State grades, and NGC has only certified 20 pieces finer than this example. Both sides have bold design motifs with frosty yellow-gold luster that shows a delicate green tint.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25HV, PCGS# 7767)
