Description:
1854-C Quarter Eagle, MS62
Tied for Second Finest Known
Ex: Ashland City
1854-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. After a one-year hiatus, production of quarter eagles at the Charlotte Mint resumed in 1854. There were 7,295 pieces struck, and it appears unlikely that more than 150-200 (if that) are known today. This example is clearly among the better survivors with bright light yellow-gold surfaces that exhibit a decent amount of frosty luster. The strike is typical for the issue with softness seen in the centers, especially on the reverse. A small scratch off the right foot of the second A in AMERICA serves as clear identification.
An estimated six or seven Uncirculated 1854-C quarter eagles are known. The finest is an MS63 NGC that has never appeared at auction. Six have been graded MS62 by NGC, of which we can trace four distinct specimens.
Ex: Ashland City Collection/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 4700, where it brought $17,250).
