1854-D $2 1/2
Condition Census 1854-D Quarter Eagle1854-D AU 58 PCGS. Exceptionally well struck for the date with strong centers and, most remarkably, fully defined stars and denticles(!). The overall appearance is superb with even, original coppery-gold and orange color as well as much of the original Mint luster. There are none of the marks typically seen on 1854-D quarter eagles and, in all honesty, there is no real wear or friction. A highlight of the North Georgia Collection and one of the prettiest examples of this rarity that we have seen.
In terms of overall quality and appearance, this coin is nearly a twin to Pittman: 1781. That piece was later graded MS 61 by NGC and it realized $28,600 at the sale. There are currently three known 1854-D quarter eagles in Mint State. The finest of these is a PCGS MS 62 that was sold by Spectrum Numismatics in late 1996 to a Midwestern collector for a strong five-figure price. A PCGS MS 60 resides in the Farmer Collection. (NGC ID# 25HZ, PCGS# 7771)
