Description

1854-O Quarter Eagle, MS63
Unrecognized Die Variety

1854-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. CAC. Variety 6. In the second edition of his New Orleans gold reference, Doug Winter notes that numerous die varieties exist, and describes three of them. This piece appears to be different from any of those, or from any of the other varieties that Heritage numismatists have seen.

The obverse has the 1 in the date low and close to the border with its left base nearly touching the denticles. The 4 is approximately centered between the base of the neck and the border. The obverse of this piece is machine doubled, confusing attribution. The reverse has the tip of the fraction bar below the inside left curve of the mintmark, with the arrow feather visible inside the mintmark.

This Select Mint State piece has brilliant light yellow surfaces with prooflike fields and bold design motifs. It is sharply struck with obvious die polish in the fields. An attractive and important example for the advanced collector. Population: 4 in 63, 2 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25J2, PCGS# 7772)
