Description:
1855-C Quarter Eagle, AU53
Lowest Date Mintage of the C-Mint Series
1855-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 1, the only known variety. The 1855-C gold dollar boasts the lowest mintage of any individual date C-mint quarter eagle at 3,677 pieces. The famous 1843-C Small Date has a lower mintage, but it only represents a part of that year's production. A small population, probably not more than 85-105 examples, survives today. The number of specimens in AU grades is in the neighborhood of 24-28 pieces. The 1855-C is noted for its poor strike, but the present coin shows more central detail than most examples. The surfaces are remarkably free of distractions. Census: 9 in 53, 47 finer (2/10).
