Second Finest Known 1855-C Quarter Eagle, Ex: Elrod1855-C MS 60 NGC. Ex: Elrod. A very rare issue among Charlotte quarter eagles with only 3,677 pieces struck, second only to the 1843-C Small Date. Additionally, the '55-C is arguably the worst struck C-mint quarter eagle from the 1850s. This piece is weakly struck in all the usual places, but this softness is mostly noticeable on the reverse. Unlike most examples seen of this issue, however, this piece lacks the heavy marks so prevalent on other coins, here each side just showing the numerous small abrasions one would expect to find on a coin of this grade. There are also a few small planchet voids out of the obverse, a trait often found on this issue. An appealing, solid mint state example of this rare issue and listed as second finest known on the Condition Census.
