Description:
Problem-Free Choice XF 1856-C Quarter Eagle
1856-C $2 1/2 XF 45 PCGS. Both the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints experienced trouble with the production of quarter eagles in 1856, but examples from the former facility are somewhat better impressed over the focal features. Nevertheless, the coin that we highlight here reveals characteristic bluntness of strike over the obverse stars, Liberty's hair curls, and the highpoints of the eagle's portrait on the reverse. There is, however, little evident wear, and both sides display thickly set, orange-gold color that is unquestionably original. A poorly produced, poorly preserved issue, the 1856-C is difficult to locate above the present grade level, and only three coins (per Winter) are known in Mint State. (NGC ID# 25J8, PCGS# 7778)
