Description:
Splendid Uncirculated 1857-D Quarter Eagle
1857-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 20-M. A well struck piece with intricately defined devices. Only select portions of the dentils show any incompleteness of strike. Flashy luster brightens the fields and rolls across the devices when the coin is rotated beneath a light. Surprisingly, there are no obvious marks, and a hair-thin slide mark above the coronet tip is mentioned solely to identify this important example should it again appear at auction. Given the pinpoint strike throughout the stars and major devices, this lovely quarter eagle would be an excellent candidate for an exceptional quality Dahlonega type set. The 1857-D has a slender production of 2,364 pieces, and NGC has certified a mere 15 pieces as Mint State. Census: 9 in 61, 5 finer (2/06).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JD, PCGS# 7783)
