Description

1857-D Two and a Half, MS61
Rare Low-Mintage Date

1857-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 20-M. The only known dies. A thin die line connects the right tip of the digit 5 to the bust truncation, a diagnostic of this obverse die. The reverse has a large D mintmark centered above the tip of the fraction bar, and joined to the branch stem. The 1857-D is a low-mintage issue (2,364 pieces) that is rare in Mint State grades.
This MS61 example has sharp design features on both sides with frosty luster and attractive lemon-gold color. Some light handling marks are noted under magnification. Mint State examples of this date are seldom encountered, with estimates suggesting that only eight to 10 examples survive today.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3421; ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 1840.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JD, PCGS# 7783)
