Description:
PCGS 1857-O MS 61. A very rare and, for the most part, unappreciated Coronet quarter eagle. The mintage of 34,000 pieces is hardly impressive, but the attrition rate for this issue was extremely high. Seldom are examples located any finer than XF and we would estimate that no more than 4-5 mint state pieces exist. There are only a couple of higher graded pieces that have been seen by the major services. This is a solid mint state piece that is also affordable for the collector who wishes to have a mint state coin at a reasonable price. Typical for the issue, the fields are semi-prooflike and there is the diagnostic striking weakness on the eagle's leg, but the obverse is actually rather well brought up. Minimally abraded with most of the marks seen in the reverse fields. Trends $6,350 in MS 60, $14,750 in MS 63. (NGC ID# 25JE, PCGS# 7784)
