Description

1858-C Quarter Eagle, MS62
Bright Yellow-Gold Example for Type

1858-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. The only known variety. In Doug Winter's latest reference on C-mint gold (2008) he rates the 1858-C as the most common Charlotte quarter eagle from the 1850s and gives a rather wide estimate of the total number known, 225-325+. Perhaps as many as a couple of dozen Uncirculated coins are extant. This is a lovely yellow-gold example with the usual semireflective fields. The strike is strong throughout, and the surfaces are clean except for a couple of larger planchet flake on the reverse, as usually seen. This piece would make an excellent candidate for type purposes.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JH, PCGS# 7787)
