Description:
1858-C Quarter Eagle, MS63
One of the Finest Known
1858-C $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 1. Naturally bright and vibrant with the body of an MS63+ to MS64 coin but with just a few too many light abrasions in the fields to grade a full MS64. The appearance of this coin is exceptional for the issue. It is nicely toned in pale rose-gold shades and has excellent overall detail. This is one of the finest known examples of the date. It is tied with three others at PCGS for the finest at the service; NGC has graded four in MS63 as well, with none finer. This would make a perfect coin for the quality-conscious type collector searching for a single superb quarter eagle from this mint.
In high grades, the 1858-C is one of the two most common quarter eagles from this mint. There are as many as two dozen known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. In properly graded MS63, the 1858-C is extremely rare with probably no more than three or four known.
Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage 3/2009), lot 2635, where it realized $17,250 as an NGC MS63.
