Description

Uncirculated 1859-D Two and a Half
Final Dahlonega Issue

1859-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 21-M. The 1859-D is the final quarter eagle issue from the Dahlonega Mint, a fact decided by dwindling output of local gold mines and a reduced inflow of California bullion. From a mintage of 2,244 pieces, only a single variety is known, which retains the same reverse die first used in 1847. The date is entered low and a bit too far to the left. The present honey-gold example is sharply struck given its Southern branch origin, although the eagle's left (facing) leg and the curls near the ear show minor incompleteness. No abrasions are visible on either the fields or devices, and a small mark on the obverse rim at 5:30 is mentioned solely as an identifier. Census: 7 in 61, 1 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25JM, PCGS# 7789)
