Description:
Conditionally Rare 1862-S Quarter Eagle, Choice AU55
1862-S $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Unlike most other S-mint Quarter Eagles from this era, the 1862-S is generally found well struck. We do note, however, that the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers are a little softly impressed. There are some remnants of soft pinkish-rose patina over the satiny, minimally marked surfaces. As an identifier, a small group of marks is seen at the border between stars 11 and 12 on the obverse. A similar group is in the field under the eagle's lower left wing. The '62-S (8,000 pieces produced) is expectantly rarer than the higher mintage (24,000 coins) 1861-S. Population: 6 in 55, 7 finer (7/05).(#7798) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25K2, PCGS# 7798)
