Description:
Rare Mint State 1863-S Quarter Eagle
1863-S $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. A quick check through our auction archives shows just how difficult the 1863-S Quarter Eagle is all grades. Only 10,800 pieces were originally struck for use in the specie-starved West, so the occasional survivor is most often extensively circulated. This lustrous reddish-golden example is one of just a handful of Mint State pieces extant and the first we have ever offered at auction. The strike is more than adequate and there are no distinguishing surface marks, just a bit of scuffiness in the fields that limits the grade. Population: 5 in 61, 1 finer (6/05).(#7799)(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25K3, PCGS# 7799)
