Description

1866 Two and a Half, MS62
Low-Mintage Date, Only 3,080 Pieces Struck

1866 $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. While not as rare as the 1865, the 1866 quarter eagle still grabs the attention of specialists. Only 3,080 business strikes were coined, making it a notable rarity in the series. Only 59 pieces have been seen by the major services, which translates to a survivorship of 35-50 individual examples in all grades. In mint condition, only eight pieces have been certified, the finest two of which are Gems. Like the 1865, the 1866's production run was low enough that the initial die polish did not diminish by successive strikes. This piece has bright, sparkling fields on each side. As always, the eagle's left (facing) leg shows considerable weakness, but the other design elements are well struck. Even reddish patina is seen over each side. Census: 2 in 62, 2 finer (1/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25K7, PCGS# 7803)
