Description:
1870-S Quarter Eagle, MS63
Appealing Early S-Mint Memento
1870-S $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The hoarding of gold coins in the East and South that began with the commencement of Civil War hostilities continued well into the Reconstruction era, and mintages of most gold coin issues were small and largely futile until around 1876. The 1870-S quarter eagle saw 16,000 pieces coined, but in the West these pieces circulated due to their hard-money tradition. This Select PCGS specimen is for all intents and purposes the finest obtainable, as it is one of only three in this grade with a single example finer (10/12). The surfaces show bright luster and a strike close to full, with appealing orange-gold color occasionally accented by pale lilac. A super memento of the early San Francisco Mint.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25KG, PCGS# 7812)
