Description

1873-S Quarter Eagle, MS64
Tied for Finest Known

1873-S $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1873-S has traditionally been termed a rarity among S-mint quarter eagles. Our experience is it is nowhere near as scarce as references claim. Dozens of XF and AU pieces are known. However, in MS64 the 1873-S is a coin that deserves the attention of specialists. Only three PCGS coins have been so graded, and one by NGC. Most notably none are finer (9/11). The surfaces on this piece are nicely frosted and the light reddish-gold color has occasional hints of lilac intermixed. The left leg of the eagle is softly struck, as usual. Each side is sharply struck otherwise, and the surfaces are minimally abraded.
