Description:
Near-Gem 1877 Quarter Eagle
Tied for Second Finest Graded
1877 $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. CAC. The 1877 Liberty quarter eagle boasts a remarkably low mintage of 1,632 pieces, and the date is prized by collectors in all grades. Most examples seen are in the AU range, and specimens in Choice condition are extremely rare. Currently, NGC has certified only two coins in MS64, with one example finer, while PCGS has graded three pieces in Choice condition, with none finer (9/11).
The present coin is a spectacular Choice example with sharply detailed design elements that show just a hint of softness on Liberty's bangs. The light yellow-gold surfaces display a few highlights of green, and offer prooflike reflectivity throughout. This coin should find a home in one of the finest collections of Liberty quarter eagles.
