Description:

1914 Lincoln Cent, MS67 Red
Top-Flight Conditional Rarity
1914 1C MS67 Red PCGS. Collectors who do not specialize in Lincoln cents might be surprised to discover the true conditional rarity of the present 1914 Lincoln in the lofty grade of MS67 Red, here certified by PCGS. Unlike some of the later P-mints in the series which exist in, if not plentiful, at least reasonable supplies in Superb Gem Red, this coin is one of only five submissions of the 1914-P at PCGS, and none are finer (6/13).

Only three times previously in the past 20 years have we offered PCGS-certified examples of this issue at this grade level and color. The MS67 Red PCGS coin in the fabulous Tom Mershon #2 All-Time PCGS Registry Set that we offered in 2005 brought $48,300 in our St. Louis Central States Signature (Heritage, 9/2005), lot 5314. In 2004, we handled a piece in MS67 Red certified in a PCGS green-label holder, a coin that brought $43,700 in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2004), lot 5431. Previous to those two examples, it had been 11 years previous, in 1993, since we offered another example in this grade -- a time well before the maturity (one might say, better yet, the explosion) of Registry Set collecting. (One might also say that 1993 was well before the conditional rarity of the 1914-P Lincoln cent in this high grade was also recognized.)

This piece is sure to ignite a bidding war among the top collectors of the Lincoln, Wheat Reverse series. Even though this is not a phrase we often use in relation to Lincoln cents, the surfaces show cartwheel luster throughout both sides. The color is a brick-red with some slightly lighter flecks of golden-red, a strictly original appearance, and both sides are free from any mentionable defect or impairment. The strike is quite sharp throughout, if not completely full.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 22BG, PCGS# 2470)
