Description:
1919-D Dime, MS 66 Full Bands PCGS, Tied for Finest Certified
1919-D 10C MS 66 Full Bands PCGS. Despite the huge difference in mintage figures, the 1919-D (9,939,000 pieces produced) compares favorably to the legendary 1916-D (264,000 pieces produced) in terms of condition rarity. While the former issue's percentage of fully struck examples among its Mint State survivors is high for the series, many of these coins exhibit fully split, but poorly rounded crossbands. The absence of this anomaly alone is enough to guarantee this frosty Gem a place in one of the finest Mercury dime collections ever assembled by a private collector. The bands are undeniably split and fully rounded from end to end. What's more, the balance of the devices are equally well defined and the luster rolls around both sides without the slightest disruption. Essentially brilliant despite delicate golden overtones. To date (6/00), only one other MS 66 Full Bands coin is known to both major grading services, and they are bettered by none.
From the Louis Bassano Collection. (NGC ID# 23H9, PCGS# 4925)
