Description:

1942/1-D Mercury Dime, MS66 + Full Bands
Absolute Rarity and Conditionally Challenging Overdate
1942/1-D 10C MS66+ Full Bands PCGS. CAC. FS-101. Both the Philadelphia and Denver versions of the 1942/1 overdate Mercury dime are doubled die (or dual-hubbing-error) varieties, but the pickup points are different between the two. The 1942/1 Philadelphia shows a rather obvious (plain to a good pair of unaided eyes) 1 downstroke at the forepoints of the 2. The 1942/1-D is considerably harder to spot, and the pickup point is a little notch of doubling at the bottom of the 4 in the date, rather than the 2. (There are signs of a 1 under the 2, but they are far fainter than on the 1942/1 Philadelphia variety.)

One might think that the considerable difference in the two varieties would make the 1942/1-D scarcer overall. In point of fact, however, both the Philadelphia and Denver issues are rare in Mint State, just about evenly split between the two. The Denver coins are generally better-struck than the Philadelphia pieces, most of the Mint State pieces attaining Full Bands status while many of the P-mint coins fall short of Full Bands. This is just such a sharply struck Denver Mint dime. Undoubtedly of even more importance is the strength of the underlying 1 beneath the 2 in the date as well as the doubling on the 4. The surfaces are brilliant and exhibit bright, swirling mint frost that is undisturbed by the usually seen abrasions. A magnifier will be required to pick up even the smallest marks that are present on this Premium Gem. The + and CAC designations speak volumes about the quality of this exceptional overdate. Population: 14 in 66 (2 in 66+) Full Bands, 0 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23K6, PCGS# 5041)
