Description:

1889-CC Dollar, AU58
Seldom Found With Nearly Complete Luster
1889-CC $1 AU58 PCGS. The 1889-CC Morgan dollar issue is even rarer than the low mintage of 350,000 pieces would suggest, as many survivors were apparently melted later. Unlike the earlier 1882-CC through 1885-CC issues, none of the 1889-CC dollars were found in the GSA sales and, once the numismatic market absorbed that fact, the issue rapidly assumed its position as the key to the CC dollars. Many low-grade survivors show various surface difficulties; Rusty Goe writes that "there is a shortage of problem-free circulated pieces in the VG to XF range, resulting in many collectors being placed on waiting lists." Of course, AU examples are in even shorter supply, especially pieces such as this that clearly approach mint condition. There is just the slightest trace of friction on this coin with almost complete mint luster. Each side is brilliant and the fields show slight semireflectivity, as often encountered. Generally the strike is strong, the only exception being the hair detail over Liberty's ear and the eagle's plumage.(Registry values: P9, N2998) (NGC ID# 2559, PCGS# 7190)
