Description:
Superb 1899-P Dollar
1899 $1 MS67 NGC. The story of this issue is well-known to most Dollar collectors, but it bears repeating for those who may not have heard it. The 1899-P has a low, official mintage of only 330,846 pieces. Because of its low mintage and relative availability in lower Uncirculated grades, the '99-P was subject to widespread promotion over many years. Study of this series by specialists beginning in the mid-1970s all came to the same conclusion: because of its availability in lower grades, the '99-P must have had a much higher mintage than records indicate. Apparently a substantial amount of the mintage was included in the mintage for the 1900-P. That being said, the '99-P is still a conditionally rare coin above MS65 condition. Only one other piece has been so graded by NGC and none are finer by either of the major services (1/02). This is a splendid coin. The striking details are complete throughout and there are no distracting abrasions on either side. Brilliant throughout. (NGC ID# 256B, PCGS# 7258)
