Description:
1899-S Silver Dollar
MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike
1899-S $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The San Francisco Mint paid out countless 1899-S Morgan dollars in the 1940s and 1950s, and those coins survive today. The result is a plentiful issue through the MS65 level, despite a modest mintage of only 2.562 million coins. Many of those dollars were prooflike examples, and such pieces are plentiful today. However, Deep Mirror Prooflike pieces remain elusive, and Gems are rarely encountered. Only five DMPL Gems and four finer pieces are certified at NGC and PCGS combined.
A sliver of electric-blue and russet patina clings to the rim areas of the present MS65 DMPL coin, and an attentive strike nicely defines the design features, including partial detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the breast feathers. A few minor grade-consistent marks are visible, more so on the reverse.(Registry values: P5, N4719) (NGC ID# 256D, PCGS# 97263)
