Description:
1836 Pattern Gold Dollar
Judd-67, PR64+ Cameo
First Federal Gold Pattern Design
1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR64+ Cameo NGC. CAC. The Liberty cap and rays of glory obverse design was executed by Christian Gobrecht, but the motif is originally Mexican, used on various denominations at numerous Mexican mints beginning in the 1820s and ranging from the half real (KM-369, for example, of Mexico City) to the eight reales (KM-376.6 is the Guanajuato version). The Liberty cap design is the same that Gobrecht used for his medal inaugurating the steam press, the piece originally dated February 22, 1836, and overdated to March 23. The reverse, also by Gobrecht, features the denomination 1 D. within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Struck in gold with a plain edge. Judd-67 has considerable historical importance, as it is the first Federal gold pattern as well as the first appearance of the gold dollar denomination in Federal coinage. By then, the Bechtlers of North Carolina had been striking their privately minted gold dollars since 1831. Given the coin turn and lack of undertype, this piece appears to be one of the original 1836 pieces rather than a later restrike. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold with perceptible frost on the raised devices and well-reflective fields. The tiny "spike" near the top of the 1 is a trait seen on most examples. A superlative example of this early and important pattern. Census: 8 in 64+, 5 finer (2/13).
