Gem 1836 Cap and Rays Gold Dollar Pattern, Judd-671836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR65 NGC. The obverse depicts a Liberty cap with rays of glory surrounding. The reverse features a circular palm branch with 1D. in the center surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the margins and the date below. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both designs. Struck in gold with a plain edge. Blushes of milky patina are limited to the reverse. Judd-67 has considerable historical importance, as it is the first Federal gold pattern as well as the first Gold Dollar issue. The important Gem specimen offered here is likely an original and not a restrike since it displays coin alignment and has no appreciable evidence of an undertype. (PCGS# 11260)
