Description:
Gem Proof 1838 J-73 Restrike Half Dollar
1838 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-73 Restrike, Pollock-77, R.5, PR66 NGC. A draped bust of Liberty faces left and wears a diadem. A ribbon in her hair is inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse is similar to that of the Gobrecht Dollar, although the eagle's beak is open and its neck is wider. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The dies have medallic alignment. Heavy die cracks on the reverse indicate with near certainty that this is a restrike, struck a couple decades after the date on the obverse. This Gem Proof has highly attractive and original heather surfaces with vivid blue, green, and iridescent toning. Considerable cameo contrast is visible even though this is not designated as a cameo example. (PCGS# 11288)
