Description

Very Rare 1854 Pattern Cent
Judd-159, Struck in Copper

1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-159, Pollock-186, High R.7, PR62 Brown NGC. An unusual pattern variety. The obverse die was made by crudely reducing an 1854 silver dollar with a lathe, causing prominent concentric die lines and blurry design details. The date resembles 1851. The reverse shows 1 CENT encircled by an oak and acorn wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Judd-159 is a formidable rarity though its electrotype copper counterpart Judd-159a is somewhat more available. This is a satiny golden-brown specimen with a crisp strike and a few small marks on each side. (NGC ID# 2VPG, PCGS# 11654)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
