Description

Popular 1855 Flying Eagle Pattern Cent, Judd-168
PR63 Red and Brown

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193, R.4, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upward, similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design for the Gobrecht dollars (and soon the Flying Eagle cents). The date 1855 is below with slanted 5s, and the reverse is similar to the large cent. The planchet is slightly smaller than the large cent, obviously a transitional pattern between the "old coppers" and small cents that were first struck in 1856. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. The obverse has a combination of mint red and blue toning, with deeper blue on the reverse. Clash marks are evident on each side, an unusual situation on pattern coins. Population: 12 in 63 Red and Brown, 18 finer (6/10). (PCGS# 11721)
