Description

Bronze 1855 Flying Eagle Cent Pattern
PR64 Brown, Judd-173

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-173, Pollock-198, Low R.7, PR64 Brown NGC. Flying Eagle Cent pattern in large format, featuring a hooked-neck eagle on the obverse and ONE CENT in the center of the reverse surrounded by a small laurel wreath. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Various metallic compositions were tried for the Flying Eagle cent patterns, and as noted in the USPatterns.com website "Both originals and restrikes are known and are extremely rare showing any red color." This piece has been analyzed by NGC and the results are that it weighs 92.2 grains and is composed of 94% copper, 5% tin, and 1% zinc. The surfaces do indeed lack any trace of red, but they possess a lovely brown and blue patina. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side and the reverse die was heavily striated. The obverse is fully brought up, but the reverse wreath lacks high point detail. (NGC ID# 27MB, PCGS# 11748)
