Description

Extremely Rare Snow-4d 1856 Flying Eagle Cent in Nickel Alloy, Judd-183

1856 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-183, Pollock-217, High R.7, PR62 PCGS. Snow-4d. The "Reverse C" variety of this popular and historically important pattern, which differs from the other three Judd reverses by the cotton leaves on the reverse being incised rather than struck in relief. The Es in ONE CENT are open. Struck in a nickel alloy (25% nickel and 75% copper) with a plain edge. Struck from Snow-4 dies, which have a point at the base of the U in UNITED and a die line within the denticles below the right ribbon end. Snow writes in his Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide, 2nd Edition, Volume 1, 1856-1858 (2001) that "only 3 to 4 [pieces are] known." This piece is better struck than the Auction '85 (Superior, lot 510) example. The strike is good but not full; slight softness is noted on the eagle's breast and on ONE CENT. The upper reverse has a couple of faint and relatively unimportant pinscratches, but the surfaces are otherwise undisturbed aside from scattered minute planchet flaws, which are as struck. Encapsulated in an earlier generation green label holder. Population: 2 in 62, 1 finer (2/04).(#11805) (NGC ID# 29B2, PCGS# 11805)
