Description:
Gem Proof 1858 Flying Eagle
Large Letters Cent, Oak Wreath
With Shield Reverse, Judd-198
1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-198, Pollock-229, Low R.6, PR65 NGC.
Design.
Combines the regular 1858 Flying Eagle, Large Letters die with the Oak Wreath, With Shield reverse also used on Judd-193 through 195. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
This variety, while sharing the same reverse, is somewhat rarer than the Judd-193 (Small Letters obverse). The AM in AMERICA are joined on the Large Letters, separated on the Small Letters.

Physical Description.
Some minor planchet roughness appears along the obverse rim, near S OF AM, but this is mentioned for pedigree purposes only. Both sides show consistent appeal, a function of the good strike and attractive golden-tan coloration. NGC Census: 4 in PR65, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR65, none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 11856)
