Description:
1858 'Small' Flying Eagle Cent
Judd-203, PR64
1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-203, Pollock-247, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The Small Flying Eagle obverse, combined with Oak Wreath reverse. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The Judd ninth edition has this as R.3, certainly a typo, as it is R.5 or higher. The Mint sold to collectors in 1858 12-piece sets containing three different major obverse design types, combined with four different reverse designs (one pairing would produce the regular-issue proof 1858 Flying Eagle cent), although several subvarieties are known.

Physical Description.
A sharp strike delineates the feather detail in that strange hawklike eagle on the obverse and accentuates the fine detail in the oak wreath. The lovely golden-tan surfaces overall appear close to a Gem grade. NGC Census: 7 in PR64; 7 finer including a PR64 Cameo example. PCGS Population: 15 in PR64, 5 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 11869)
