Description

PR64 1858 'Small' Flying Eagle
Cent, Judd-206

1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-206, Pollock-242, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The Small Flying Eagle obverse combined with the Agricultural Wreath reverse, featuring corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Another available variety with the Small Flying Eagle. Pollock notes a Pollock-242, a possible "double eagle" cent based on a 1911 article in The Numismatist by Edgar H. Adams, titled "Live American Numismatic Items":

"Mr. William H. Woodin, the well-known pattern collector, has one piece in his collection that can very properly be called a 'double eagle.' The design shows on one side the small flying eagle as used on one [sic] variety of the copper-nickel pattern cents of 1858, while on the other is the large flying eagle that was used on the flying eagle cents of 1856, 1857, and 1858. Neither side bears a date, and the metal of which it is composed is pure nickel."

The variety, if indeed it exists, is unlisted now in Judd.

Physical Description.
Considerable cameo contrast appears on both sides, although it is unnoted by NGC. There are a few trivial flecks, but the strike is razor-sharp. Beautiful iridescence is seen on both obverse and reverse in shades of rose, citrine, and cyan. NGC Census: 10 in PR64, 7 finer. PCGS Population: 18 in PR64; 3 finer including a PR64 Cameo (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29BM, PCGS# 11877)
