Description

PR64 1858 Judd-213, Pollock-258 Indian Cent,
Sharp R.6 Variety

1858 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-213, Pollock-258, R.6, PR64 NGC.
Design.
Transitional issue, the obverse as adopted in 1859 (pointed bust on truncation) combined with the Agricultural Wreath 1858 reverse, with a wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Pollock enumerates the obverse and reverse variants (all of which share the same Judd number, 213) as follows:
--Pollock-251. Pointed bust truncation as on regular-issue cents from 1859 and part of 1860; the obverse is called "Low Date" in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia. Reverse shows point of leaf closest to C(ENT) well above the base of that letter. R.7.
--Pollock-252. Same obverse as Pollock-251; reverse point of leaf closest to C(ENT) about even with base of C. R.6.
--Pollock-257. Rounded bust truncation as on regular-issue Indian cents from 1860 through part of 1864. This is called the "Centered Date" in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia. Reverse shows point of leaf closest to C(ENT) well above the base of that letter. R.7.
--Pollock-258.
Same obverse as Pollock-257; reverse point of leaf closest to C(ENT) about even with base of C. R.6.

Pollock in 1992 and USPatterns.com today rate both the Pollock-252 and 258 varieties with leaf tip even with base of C as R.6, but the Pollock-251 and 257, with leaf tip high, as R.7.

Physical Description. Rounded Bust, leaf tip even with base of C(ENT). A lovely near-Gem piece that shows only the most picayune flecks, hardly worthy of mentioning. Pretty golden-pink surfaces offer a bold strike and much eye appeal, with considerable cameo contrast. NGC Census: 13 in PR64, 5 finer. PCGS Population: 16 in PR64, 1 finer. (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
