Description

1859 Paquet Pattern Half Dollar in Copper, Judd-236, PR64 Brown

1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-236, Pollock-283, 285, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. Anthony Paquet's design offers a seated Liberty facing leftward, looking expectantly toward the horizon. She supports a fasces with her right hand, and balances a shield in her left. The date is in exergue beneath, and 13 stars encircle the ensemble. An eagle and shield with olive and arrows in the claws, appear on the reverse. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The strike is from the "Perfect Ribbon" reverse, showing a full ribbon, pointed wingtips, and four vertical shield lines. Both sides are medium olive-brown and greenish-brown, with a small area of coppery brightness on Liberty's lower body. A sharp and pleasing piece. (NGC ID# 29CG, PCGS# 11962)
