Select 1859 French Head Half, Judd-2371859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-237, Pollock-293, R.4, PR63 PCGS. The "French Head" design for the half dollar that features a bust of Liberty facing right, draped with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY and a wide wreath of oak and vine on her head. The reverse has HALF DOLLAR in the center and is surrounded by a wreath of cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, corn, wheat, and oak. Although credit for the design is traditionally assigned to Longacre, Saul Teichman of uspatterns.com suggests that Paquet may in fact have been the designer. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Struck from heavily striated dies, the fields are very deeply mirrored and the coin overall is brilliant except for a light accent of pale golden patina around the devices. A few small contact marks in the right obverse field and short pinscratches above Liberty's head account for the grade.(#11966) (PCGS# 11966)
