Description:
1859 Half Dollar Pattern by Longacre
Judd-238, PR67
Brown
Probably the Finest Known
1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-238, Pollock-294, R.5, PR67 Brown NGC. The Longacre design for the half dollar that features a bust of Liberty facing right, draped with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY with a wide wreath of oak and vine on her head. The reverse has HALF DOLLAR in the center and is surrounded by a wreath similar to that seen on the reverse of the 1860 to 1916 dime. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Of the 30 or so examples that are believed to exist of this pattern, this is undoubtedly the finest. There actually is a second PR67 Brown listed by NGC, but we imagine this is a resubmission of this coin and the second listing has not been dropped from their Census Report. Even though the surfaces are listed as Brown, there are significant portions of mint red around the devices and within the recesses. And rather than brown, the coin is actually predominantly steel-blue. The fields are deeply reflective and there are no mentionable or noticeable marks on either side. (PCGS# 11968)
