Description

1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-240, Pollock-296, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. The Longacre design with the "cereal wreath" reverse. Pattern expert, Saul Teichman, questions whether this pattern was designed by Longacre or Paquet as the 1859 half dollar patterns used Paquet's punches in the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. One of the more available patterns in copper. This piece is struck in copper with a reeded edge. The deep chocolate-brown patina has even coloration unless angled just slightly away from the viewer, in which case it flashes deep blue and faint red from the deeply mirrored fields. A premium example for the grade.
From the Frank O. Fredericks Collection, Part III.(#11974) (NGC ID# 29CK, PCGS# 11974)
