1859 "French Head" Half Dollar, Judd-2411859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-241, Pollock-297, R.4, PR62 PCGS. The so-called "French Head" Liberty design for the half dollar, paired with a reverse that has 50 CENTS surrounded by a cereal wreath. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. It is uncertain whether this was designed by James Longacre or Anthony Paquet as the 1859 half dollar patterns used Paquet's punches in the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The appearance of this piece is far superior to the stated grade. The fields shine brightly through the golden and blue toning on the obverse and the scattered patches of golden color on the reverse. Hairlined, but not harshly, there is an interesting planchet lamination in the right obverse field below the ER of AMERICA. (PCGS# 11978)
