1859 Pattern Half Dollar, PR64 Brown
Judd-242, Pollock-298
1859 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-242, Pollock-298, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. The European-inspired design of James B. Longacre, the so-called French Head, shows a bust of Liberty facing right, draped with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY with a wide wreath of oak and vine on her head. the date 1859 is below. The reverse has the denomination 50 CENTS within a wreath of cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, corn, wheat, and oak. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Despite the Brown designation, glimpses of original mint red show near the rims. A dark toning area is noted through 18 in the date. Population: 6 in 64 Brown, 6 finer (8/12). (PCGS# 11980)
