Description:
1859 Gold Dollar Pattern, Copper
Judd-256, PR63 Gilt
1859 PG$1 Judd-256, Pollock-7010, Low R.7, PR63 Gilt NGC.
Design.
Both sides of this gold dollar pattern are similar to the regular-issue Indian Princess gold dollar, but show the characteristic taller, narrow font attributed to Anthony C. Paquet. Struck in copper and gilt, with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Although all known examples of this design are struck in copper, many, including the present piece, are gilt. The Judd ninth edition says "the jury is still out on whether this is a Mint issue or a private production." Pollock, listing them under "Uncertain Issues 1800-1920," comments that the design is much like a Paquet pattern gold dollar of 1858, but "somewhat cruder in appearance; a caricature of the 1858 issue." (The 1858 pattern is Judd-222 and 223.)

Physical Description.
The surfaces are lightly hairlined, but the gilt was well done; each side shows an uninterrupted layer of gold. Sharply struck throughout. The only identifying marks are a small planchet void on the obverse below the D in UNITED, and on the reverse there is a series of reeding marks to the right of the digit in the denomination. NGC Census: 2 in PR63 gilt, no other gilt pieces in any grade. PCGS Population: No gilt pieces graded (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: ANA Midwinter Auction (Heritage, 2/1987), lot 1303.
