Description:
Gem Proof 1862 GOD OUR TRUST
Half Dollar, Judd-293
1862 50C Half Dollar, Judd-293, Pollock-351, R.5, PR65 NGC.
Design.
The regular Liberty Seated half dollar dies of the year 1862, except that the reverse contains GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
A continuation into 1862 (and one that would last into 1863) of the experimentation with the motto on the larger coinage denominations: the eagle and double eagle, half dollar and silver dollar. The Judd-293 (with scroll) and Judd-295 (no scroll) silver patterns are among the more widely available of the era at R.5, while still quite rare in absolute terms.

Physical Description.
The obverse fields were more completely finished in the Mint than those of the reverse. The reverse shows considerable evidence of die striations. Beautiful rose-colored centers are surrounded by lime-green patina at the margins. The only mentionable pedigree marker is a carbon spot just above Liberty's foot. NGC Census: 4 in PR65; 2 finer including one in PR65 Cameo. PCGS Population: 8 pieces have been graded as PR64 with none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: John Work Garrett; Garrett Collection, John Hopkins University (Stack's, 3/1976), lot 625.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
