Description:
1863 Postage Currency Ten Cent
PR65 Red and Brown
Judd-326B in Copper, Not Billon
1863 10C Postage Currency Ten Cents, Judd-326B, unlisted in Pollock, Possibly R.8, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. This is the Postage Currency design listed as Judd-326 except it appears to be struck in copper rather than the billon composition described by Judd. Plain edge. The entire Postage Currency series is fraught with confusion, misunderstanding, and misattributions. Researcher David Cassel has published two editions of United States Pattern Postage Currency Coins, and much of the previous confusion has been cleared up. The appearance of billon and pure copper is nearly identical. The only way to determine the difference is by SEM-EDX analysis. While no printout accompanies this piece attesting that such an analysis has been done, we must assume it was since NGC was specific about the relatively new B classification, rather than just attributing it as a Judd-326. The surfaces display significant underlying mint red with a light dusting of brown over each side. Two die cracks are seen on the obverse, and the trace of a fingerprint is easily seen on the reverse. This is a rare pattern issue, and one that the astute pattern specialist should note closely.
